more about our comprehensive process...

Initial Assessment

We conduct a detailed interview to secure the necessary information to evaluate your property, the tenancy, and whether or not you qualify for a potential in-law unit legalization.

Attorney Meeting

A meeting with a Bornstein Law attorney will be scheduled, allowing for a full review of the ramifications of legalizing your unit, including the coordination of tenant displacement during any renovations. This in-person meeting will address the fundamental risks and benefits of legalizing your in-law unit.

Contractor inspection

A general contractor with over a decade of experience expediting S.F. Department of Building Inspection permits will fully evaluate the existing condition of your in-law unit to determine its potential for legalization in compliance with the existing code.

Final proposal

We provide a detailed written proposal to guide you through the process of the legalization, if we determine that your in-law unit is eligible. Included in this proposal is an estimate of the costs related to the permit application, construction and anticipated legal costs for the full scope of the work - for both contractor's and attorney's estimate.
